Neowin originally reported that the credentials were posted to a developer forum on Pastebin.com on October 1.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 15px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-size: 12px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 17px; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After learning of the breach, Microsoft &#8220;immediately requested that the credentials be removed and launched an investigation to determine the impact to customers,&#8221; it\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit; font-size: 12px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; vertical-align: baseline; color: #1e5b7e; text-decoration: none; cursor: pointer; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;\" href=\"http:\/\/windowslivewire.spaces.live.com\/blog\/cns!2F7EB29B42641D59!41528.entry?wa=wsignin1.0&amp;sa=363915619\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">wrote on its Windows Live blog<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company was quick to point out that credentials were stolen through what was &#8220;likely a phishing scheme.&#8221; The company said that it &#8220;was not a breach of internal Microsoft data.&#8221; It&#8217;s currently &#8220;working to help customers regain control of their accounts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNET&#8217;s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft didn&#8217;t say exactly how many accounts were affected, but Neowin reported that the original list displayed accounts with names starting with &#8220;A&#8221; and &#8220;B.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twitter and other social networks are\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: inherit; font-size: 12px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; vertical-align: baseline; color: #1e5b7e; text-decoration: none; cursor: pointer; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;\" href=\"http:\/\/search.twitter.com\/search?q=hotmail+password\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\">abuzz<\/span><\/span><\/a> with people advising others to change their passwords.
