The Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker that markets its products as able to “Rip, Mix and Burn,” will offer the service first to users of the Macintosh platform with a Microsoft Windows version available by the end of the year.
\nThe project, according to Reuters was chiefly negotiated by CEO Steve Jobs and has the blessing of the five major record labels. Jobs’ clout in the entertainment industry has escalated after the success of animated movies produced by his Pixar studios.
\nThe new music service is expected to optimally interact with Apple’s iPod player and is based on its corresponding iTunes music file software. Users will be able to download any song to their computer for under a dollar. About two-thirds of the price will be going to the music company. Unlike similar pay offerings by pressplay and Musicnet, Apple is not expected to charge a monthly subscription fee.
