Levittown  Computer hackers managed to steal $600,000 from a New Jersey shore town’s bank account.

Officials say $200,000 still hasn’t been recovered. TD Bank notified Brigantine on Tuesday that multiple wire transfers had taken place from its account. Police said someone was able to get a user name and password.

Authorities said a virus or a fake Web page set up to mimic the bank’s real one might have been used to carry out the thefts. State Police and the FBI are assisting the investigation and sent a computer forensic team to check city systems.

Mayor Phil Guenther told The Press of Atlantic City he’s confident the city will recoup its losses, either through insurance or some other means.

“I believe it will be recovered and/or reimbursed to the city of Brigantine in some manner,” Guenther said, adding the city “will be working with all agencies involved and will adhere to any recommendations in the future.” The bank said it was able to reverse about $400,000 of the fraudulent transfers and was trying to see if it could recoup the rest.

In March, about $100,000 was stolen from an Egg Harbor Township account at Cape Bank in a similar manner, with wire transfers being sent out in increments of less than $10,000.
