Facebook filtering & censoring chat.

Posted by deepquest on July 9, 2009 – 11:32 pm

I noticed few weeks ago that facebook chat was censoring some sites when using posting then to another friend. Not a big deal, you’ll tell me. Not really the biggest concern is that it mean that chat are also monitored and censored. Some words or website address cannot be posted, well in theory…

Here is a basic POC (Proof Of Concept):

-Open a chat discussion with one of your friend copy the folllowing url in the chat window: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3690610/CISCO_BOOK

you should have a nice notification like this

The same problem will appear if you try to post the link on your wall.

An easy way is to use one of those short url sites such as http://tinyurl.com/. Now copy the following url in the chat window in Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/q4rysw
Make sure that your friend click on the link to confirm that it worked.

The biggest concern is who decide and on which criteria what is good or bad for me? I assume that Facebook have a list of site that can’t be posted either on my wall or in facebook chat. We can also imagine that they get notification based on keywords “a la” Echelon? Can I say C4, 911, dynamite, or kill the president without being raided within the next hours by the fedz?
