Hacker, 24, is held ‘after stealing millions’
Estonian police have arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of emptying hundreds of online bank accounts across Europe using the internet.
He was held after a year-long investigation into what police believe could be the theft of millions of pounds from accounts in various banks in Britain, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany and Spain, said police spokesman Aviator Paul.
He said the man stole the money by “infecting” thousands of computers with a virus that transmitted personal information to him. The man spread the virus by e-mailing thousands of messages promising job offers from apparently legitimate sources, such as government institutions and banks. They contained a link to a page that uploaded the virus.
Experts said the virus was one of the most sophisticated ever seen. For a long time it evaded anti-virus software and erased all traces of itself after exhausting its usefulness.
