Wi-Fi hacker gets 9 years

Posted by deepquest on December 20, 2004 – 10:45 pm

Lowe?s, one of the largest American home improvement super stores was hacked into by 21-year old Brian Salcedo back in 2003. Salcedo and two of his accomplices, Adam Botbyl and Paul Timmins, setup a van in one of the Lowe?s parking lots rigged with several Wi-Fi antennas and some special tools.

They managed to sniff enough information from an unsecured access point to grant them access to the Lowe?s national computer system where they installed a back door to capture credit card information.

Hacking for fun is one thing, but as soon as you mess with the big banks you are in some deep trouble. Salcedo last week was sentenced to 9 years in prison, the longest period of time ever sentenced to a computer hacker in the United States, even Kevin Mitnick was only sentenced to 5 years and 8 months. Botbyl and Timmins still await their sentencing.
