Apple launch iTunes in selected EU countries (conspiracy version)

Posted by deepquest on June 16, 2004 – 5:16 pm

Apple have finally launched their online music store iTunes in Europe, but only a select few countries have access to it. Most site of Apple are powered with Akamai banwidth. Akamai was under heavy attack since yesterday. It’s also intersting to see that yahoo is also powered by Akamai, and they just upgraded the mail storage to 100 mo per user on their free mail.

So question is Apple Music Store targeted and inderectly Akamai, or Akamai didn’t support major changes lauching Apple Music Store in Europe and upgrading webmail to 100 mo storage the same day? Told you that it was a conspiracy version of the story!

More seriously, France, Germany and the UK can use it, with support for the rest of the European Union supposedly coming in October of this year.

With a catalogue of over 700,000 tracks from all five of the major record companies, as well as many independent record labels, consumers certainly have plenty of choice when it comes to content. They also now have lots of choice when it comes to service selection, with Napster, OD2, Wippit, and many more, all now jostling for place to attract customers. Apple have one of the largest brands in the online music industry service, and no doubt they’ll be hoping to capitalise on that. Also, their seamless integration with the iPod music player make it the service of choice for users of that device.

NOTE: If you’re an ADC member AND have .Mac account make sure that your personnal info are the same! Otherwise you’ll have big problems to activate your account. It seems like, I’m 90% sure, that Apple cross match the info from the 2 databases.
