HenWen 2.0.1 (aka Snort for OSX)

Posted by deepquest on September 30, 2003 – 4:14 pm

HenWen is a network security package for Mac OS X that makes it easy to configure and run Snort, a free Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS). HenWen’s goal is to simplify setting up and maintaining software that will scan network traffic for undesirable traffic a firewall may not block. Everything you need to have is bundled in; there is no compiling or command line use necessary.

Version 2.0.1 adds the following:

-Updated to Snort 2.0.2, which fixes some internal bugs and adds support for rule thresholds and suppression. (Note: HenWen does not yet have a GUI for handling thresholds.)

-Added a Spanish localization (gracias to CJ Scaminaci).

-Removed the problematic ASN.1 preprocessor.

-HenWen now ignores rulesets that do not have an associated file name, which fixes the NSFileManager exception that several people reported.

-Fixed an annoying problem in LetterStick where the preferences & statistics windows sometimes appeared behind all other windows.

-The snort-log-rotate.sh script has been updated; the update fixes a problem where Snort was, in some cases, not being properly reset after rotating the logs. Also, the script will now remove old log file directories if “prunelogdirs” is turned on.
