Alcatel-Lucent said Friday it is reviewing security procedures and has halted use of couriers for sending personnel information after a computer disk with financial and other data on employees and retirees went missing.
The Paris-based telecommunications equipment maker said it is trying to recover the disk by working with the courier used to ship it and two outside vendors involved in the shipment. The company also notified the New Jersey State Police and the U.S. Secret Service.

A fire started by a homeless man knocked out service between Boston and New York on the experimental Internet2 network Tuesday night.the fire, which also disrupted service on the Red Line subway, started around 8:20 p.m. when a homeless man tossed a lit cigarette. The cigarette landed on a mattress, which ignited and led to a two-alarm fire.

A survey of IT managers showed that while more than half use a USB flash drive on a daily basis, many still view portable storage devices as a huge security threat.
A worker calls up a sensitive investor list and downloads it on her thumb drive, slips it into her pocket, and walks out, smiling and waving to her boss and the security officer stationed at the front door.
This is just one of the scenarios that security professionals and IT managers are increasingly worried about. According to one recent study, IT managers said portable storage devices, such as thumb drives and MP3 players, have surpassed even malware to become a top concern.
